December 24, 2023PT Adis Dimension Footwear: The Percentage of Total Female Leaders which Reaches 21%
December 24, 2023In Indonesia, the number of women who are interested in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) majors are increasing from year to year. According to the International Labour Organization (ILO) in 2017, there were 38.7% female students who wanted to work in the fields of construction, manufacturing and information technology. However, only 16% of women ended up pursuing the STEM field.
Telkomtelstra is one of the companies that supports gender diversity in the STEM world, especially in the technology sector. Telkomtelstra has a mission to provide equal opportunities to men and women in the workplace, conveying the importance of business processes to promote equality and develop policies related to women’s economic empowerment.
As an effort to support this mission, Telkomtelstra collaborates with the Indonesia Business Coalition for Women Empowerment (IBCWE), which is a coalition of companies committed to promoting women’s economic empowerment and gender equality. One of the programs that have been carried out includes Investing in Education: Campus Roadshow, which is a program aimed at conducting talent recruitment complemented by sharing sessions related to products and promoting women in the STEM industry to large campuses in Indonesia such as Telkom University, Binus University, University of Indonesia and the Bandung Institute of Technology.
Furthermore, Telkomtelstra conducted a Youth Takeover program, which was inspired by the IBCWE’s initiative program, namely Women Take Over. The Youth Takeover program, which was held in November 2019, is intended to provide opportunities for millennial employees to try management roles. This initiative provides an opportunity for five selected millennial employees to spend the day as five members of Executive Leadership Team at Telkomtelstra which are President Director, Chief Financial Officer, Chief Sales Officer, Chief Operations Officer, and Chief Product & Services Officer.
Aqmarina Andira, Corporate Secretariat and Government Relations Manager of Telkomtelstra, the initiator of the 2019 Youth Takeover said that, “Providing opportunities for young employees – especially women to achieve their dreams as CEOs in Indonesia can help solve a social phenomenon that is often referred to as ‘ breaking the glass ceiling’, namely a metaphor that refers to the transparent and artificial obstacles faced by women or minorities to reach high positions in a company. Not only that, this Youth Takeover program also provide direct experience for young employees, to learn about business, leadership, the decision-making process, and of course it can help increase self-confidence.”
This initiative provides a unique opportunity to follow Management in their daily work, where young employees also gain experience in chairing internal meetings and expressing their opinions on issues impacting the company. It is expected that this initiative inspires and gives a boost of enthusiasm for millennial employees, while at the same time providing new ideas and inspiration for company leaders.
Telkomtelstra also has various policies that support working mothers, one of which is a flexible working arrangement policy.
The technology sector is a sector that is still dominated by men. Erik Meijer, as President Director of Telkomtelstra, sees the need for company to support the efforts to increase the diversity and women participation in his company. Therefore, initiatives to ensure diversity and also to provide equal opportunities for both men and women in the workplace, must come from various directions, especially from company leaders who are corporate policy makers. The employees of Telkomtelstra have started to feel this effort.
“Telkomtelstra’s support for gender equality has made the dreams of working mothers come true,” [z1] said Desqi Cahyaningrum, Customer Relationship & Administration Manager.
