Women’s chances are getting higher and higher to occupy the highest positions in the company. This can be seen from the results of the Census study of Women in Executive Positions in IDX200 Companies.
This study was conducted by the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) together with the Indonesia Business Coalition for Women Empowerment (IBCWE) and BOI Research as a first step to understand more deeply the situation of women’s leadership in large companies in Indonesia in 2019-2022.
In IDX200 companies, women executives relatively often take a deputy president director (20 percent) or a marketing & sales position (19 percent) even though there is a decline of 9 percent in the marketing & sales position compared to the previous year (2020). See table 2 below for details:
As a deputy president director is usually the next-in-line position to be a president director, this is encouraging news for women leaders in IDX200 companies. There is a high possibility that this will increase women’s chance of becoming CEO in the coming years.
The next good news is that several sectors have begun to show good performance in terms of the representation of women in leadership positions, namely in the non-primary consumer and health sectors. This is contained in the results of the Census study of Women in Executive Positions in 200 Companies (Top 200) IDX. The two sectors became the ‘champions’ that almost achieved gender balance in the top 200 companies indexed by the IDX.
Executive Director of the Indonesia Business Coalition for Women Empowerment (IBCWE) Maya Juwita explained, there are three industrial sectors with the highest representation of women as company executives, namely, in the non-primary consumer goods sector at 29 percent, the health sector at 27 percent, followed by the technology sector at 23 percent.
Furthermore, the infrastructure, transportation and logistics, and basic materials sectors in the top 200 IDX companies still need to increase their gender diversity at the board of directors’ level. In 2021, there was only 1 woman out of 10 executives in the three industries. Women’s representation in executive positions by industry:
Overall, the results showed that only about 4 percent of women are leaders in the companies included in the IDX200.
“Only eight companies have a female CEO. Meanwhile, in the same period, female employees took on the role of executive team or executives leadership team accounted for 15 percent of the entire company. As many as 21 percent of total companies have achieved gender equality in the executive line-up. On the other hand, it is recorded that 94 out of 200 IDX200 companies do not have women who act as executive teams,” said Maya.
On a different occasion, the Minister of SOEs, Erick Thohir also raised his ministry’s commitment in implementing gender equality by, among others, providing a sense of security, comfort, and opening wide opportunities for women in SOEs. Also included in these efforts are creating a work environment that is free of discrimination and gender-based violence, implementing equal rights and career development opportunities.
Erick Thohir emphasized, “Our commitment in BUMN is reflected in several affirmative action policies, one of which is by making a target of 15 percent female leadership in SOEs by 2021. Alhamdulillah, this target has been achieved. Going forward, we will increase our target of 25 percent female leadership by 2023. The goal is to give a spotlight to female professionals in state-owned enterprises with brilliant performance.”
