FAMILY PERMIT IS THE SMALLEST CHALLENGE, THE BIGGEST IS…?
Where is the region with the highest number of women choosing to work?
International Labor Organization (ILO) release a report based on the 2016 Gallup World Poll calculation. Gallup states this study accounts the survey sample of a total of 70,561 observations representing the survey’s responses of women in 127 countries. Titled as World Employment Social Look, it is an effort to foresee trend among women in 2017.
It shows the big five of continents where women have significant will to work: Sub Saharan Africa 85.4 percent, Northern, Southern, and Western Europe 84.8 percent, Southeastern Asia and Pacific 81.2 percent, other two Asia regions, Middle and Western Asia, reach 79.8 percent for each, and North America 79.1 percent.
This study also explains what women view as challenges if they decide to work: healthcare are less adequate, family permit, harassment/discrimination, work life-balanced, less salary, and unequal payment. Women in Southeastern Asia and Pacific who choose to work and view that work life-balanced is the greatest challenge reach 26.6 percent. On the contrary, family permit is considered as the smallest challenge with 2.1 percent. For work life-balanced challenge, this applied not only for women in Southeastern Asia and Pacific but also almost at the entire regions.
This study shows more than 70 percent women in all regions but Southern Asia reveal their expectations to get paid jobs. However, globally number of women at the workplace is less than 50 percent. Thus, some challenges have been confirmed as limitation for women capacity and freedom to be at the workplace.
